Rockstar’s GTA 6 launch trailer dropped October 15 — and within hours, the downgrade debate was back. Fans on Reddit and X said the new footage looked softer, hazier, and more washed-out than Trailer 2, with some even making “unblurred” versions. Digital Foundry went frame-by-frame on the PS5 footage. Their verdict: no downgrade — still 1440p at 30fps on base PS5.

What fans saw

The most common complaint was a hazy appearance: blurriness softening the visuals, excessive bloom fading the vibrant colors. One widely shared post offered an “Unblurred Version of the GTA 6 Launch Trailer” with adjusted lighting — and plenty of commenters said they’d prefer the final game to look like that. Others argued Rockstar simply chose the color grade with TV commercials in mind.

What Digital Foundry found

DF counted no change in resolution: the trailer runs at 1440p upscaled to 4K on a base PS5, matching earlier footage. Their explanation for the haze is narrower — the changed look may be specific to this particular PS5 footage, likely trailer post-processing and bloom rather than a change to the game itself. They did flag the HDR presentation as a weak spot, and noted there’s no sign of Sony’s new QSSR upscaler in the trailer.

What actually got better

Here’s the part the debate missed: DF had previously criticized uneven animations in earlier GTA 6 trailers — frame rates held, but fast camera pans exposed choppy character movement, a long-standing RAGE engine issue. In the launch trailer, those problems are gone. DF calls it a careful read of trailer footage rather than a final promise, but a years-old engine bug appearing fixed is genuinely good news.

When you can judge for yourself

Grand Theft Auto 6 launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Until then, trailers are all anyone has — and as DF’s analysis shows, trailers can mislead in both directions.

KongMNG’s take

The downgrade panic happens before every Rockstar launch, and it’s been wrong every time. DF’s frame-by-frame says the pixels are fine — and the fixed animation judder is the kind of quiet improvement that actually matters when you’re playing. November 19 will settle it for real.
