SEGA and RGG Studio have ended months of silence on Virtua Fighter Crossroads with a new trailer, and its star is Lionel Rafale: a mysterious young praying mantis fighter who arrives in Vilasapara and puts the game’s protagonist, Cielo, on the floor.

The trailer, released on October 29, 2026, is the first real news on Crossroads in months, and SEGA clearly saved something fans would recognise. The name Rafale carries more than thirty years of series history, and the new footage leans into that legacy while introducing a fighter the series has never had before.
Who is Lionel Rafale?
SEGA’s official description calls Lionel a mysterious young martial artist who has arrived in the city of Vilasapara. He is, in the publisher’s words, a force to be reckoned with: in the trailer he challenges Cielo, the protagonist of the story mode, in a street fight and outclasses him. His fighting style is Northern Praying Mantis kung fu, known in the series as Tourou-ken. Why he has really come to Vilasapara is the question SEGA wants hanging over the story.
The surname is the story. Lion Rafale, the flamboyant French fighter who debuted in 1994’s Virtua Fighter 2, built his entire identity on the same praying mantis style, and Lionel fights exactly like him. In the trailer, Lionel talks about how his father gave him everything, and coverage of the reveal widely reads the character as Lion’s son, a next-generation fighter carrying the family name, the family wealth, and the family style. SEGA itself is billing Lionel as a brand new story character rather than a returning one, and describes him as the game’s second legacy reveal, so expect the exact family connection to be a plot point the game wants to explore rather than a detail it gives away in a trailer.
What Crossroads actually is
Virtua Fighter Crossroads is a completely new entry in the series SEGA and Yu Suzuki started in arcades in 1993, and it is being developed by RGG Studio, the team behind Yakuza and Like a Dragon. The title was revealed at Summer Game Fest 2026, and the pitch is a genuine departure: a cinematic, story-driven single-player adventure built around four protagonists, Cielo among them, wrapped around the grounded, realistic versus fighting the series has always been known for. Where most fighting games treat story as a ladder of matches, RGG is building the kind of narrative campaign it specialises in, with the one-on-one battles as the core of the action.
The roster so far
Lionel joins a confirmed cast that already mixes the old guard with the new story’s faces. SEGA has confirmed Akira, Pai, and Wolf from the classic roster, alongside newcomers Cielo and Stella. Earlier trailers have covered the official reveal, Cielo’s story, and a separate teaser built around a fighter called Bakunawa, and with a 2027 launch ahead, character reveals are likely to come much faster from here.
Release window and platforms
Virtua Fighter Crossroads is scheduled for 2027, and SEGA still has not announced a firm release date. The platform list is not officially locked either, although reports consistently point to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. If you want to play Virtua Fighter in the meantime, the latest available entry is Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage on Steam.
