The Verge reported Xbox had secured exclusive cloud streaming rights for Grand Theft Auto 6, which would have let PC players stream it at launch. Hours later, Xbox's chief strategy officer publicly called the report “misreporting.” Here's the full timeline.
The report
On October 6, The Verge's Tom Warren reported that Xbox CEO Asha Sharma told employees during an internal all-hands meeting that Xbox had landed a deal for the exclusive game streaming rights for Grand Theft Auto 6. According to the report, Sharma described it as “something no other platform holder is doing.”
The implication was significant: with no native PC version announced, Xbox Cloud Gaming would have been the only way to play GTA 6 on a PC at launch on November 19. Other cloud services like GeForce Now and PlayStation Plus streaming would have been locked out, at least during the exclusivity window.
The denial
On October 7, Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball responded directly on X, calling the report “misreporting.” His full statement: “While the excitement for GTAVI and Xbox is great to see, it has also led to some misreporting. We are looking forward to launching GTAVI on Xbox November 19, though the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC.”
That's about as clear as it gets. No exclusive streaming deal. No PC streaming at launch.
What this means for PC players
Nothing changes. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has announced no PC version and no PC release date. Based on the studio's history with GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, a PC port is widely expected eventually — but Rockstar hasn't said a word about it.
The rumor-mill lesson here: a single report, even from a credible outlet, isn't confirmation until the companies involved back it up. In this case, Xbox killed it within a day.
KongMNG's take
This one stung for PC-only players, and I get it — the idea of streaming GTA 6 on day one without buying a console was exciting. But the speed of the denial tells you everything: if there were even a grain of truth to an exclusivity deal, Xbox wouldn't have had a senior executive publicly swatting it down within hours. PC players, we wait. Again.
