Rockstar Games has moved the Grand Theft Auto VI preload up to November 10, nine days before launch, and confirmed the download needs up to 212 GB of free space on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The biggest download of the year now has a date. Rockstar Games confirmed on November 3, 2026 that digital pre-loading for Grand Theft Auto VI begins on November 10, nine days before the game launches on November 19. The date moved up by two days from the original plan, and it comes with a number every console owner needs to see before launch week: the pre-load file will require up to 212 GB of free space, depending on your device.

When the Preload Starts

The start time depends on your platform. On PlayStation 5, pre-loading opens on November 10 at midnight, local time, wherever you live. On Xbox Series X|S, it opens at 12:00 a.m. GMT on November 10 for everyone at once, which lands on the evening of November 9 in the US: 7 p.m. ET and 4 p.m. PT. Pre-loading is for players who have pre-ordered a digital copy, and Rockstar moved the date forward from November 12, giving everyone two extra days to get the download finished.

The 212 GB Problem

The headline figure is up to 212 GB. Store trackers had already pegged the PS5 standard edition at around 210 GB in late October, and Rockstar's official number lands right on top of that. What that means in practice depends on your console. A launch model PS5 leaves about 667 GB of usable space, so Grand Theft Auto VI alone takes up roughly a third of the drive. On a 1 TB Xbox Series X, with about 802 GB usable, it fills about a quarter. The squeeze is worst on the Xbox Series S: with only about 364 GB usable, this one game needs more than half of everything the console can hold. Sony's own support guidance also warns that installs can need extra temporary room beyond the file size, so clearing exactly 212 GB and nothing more could still leave you short on install day.

There Is No Disc in the Box

Physical buyers are downloading too. Rockstar has confirmed the boxed version of Grand Theft Auto VI contains a download code and no disc. Those code-in-box copies reach retailers from November 12, so boxed buyers can redeem the code and start the same download two days after digital pre-orders open. Whichever version you bought, at $79.99 for the standard edition, the full game arrives over your internet connection.

How Long the Download Takes

At 212 GB, download time is a real planning issue, and these are rough estimates based on the official size. On a 100 Mbps connection, expect around 4 hours and 45 minutes. At 50 Mbps, you are looking at roughly 9 and a half hours, basically an overnight download. At 500 Mbps it drops to about an hour, and a gigabit connection can finish in around 30 minutes, assuming your speed holds steady the whole way. On PS5, a pre-ordered game usually starts downloading on its own once pre-load opens if automatic downloads are on. On Xbox, check My games & apps, then the full library, and keep the console set to keep games up to date. Starting on November 10 instead of launch night is the entire point of the head start Rockstar just gave you.

Preloaded Is Not Playable

One thing the download does not change: the game still unlocks on November 19. A finished pre-load means the files sit on your drive, encrypted, until launch. Rockstar has not yet announced the exact unlock time for launch day, so that is the next detail to watch for. Until then, the homework is simple. Check your free space this week, delete or archive what you are not playing, and be ready when the gates open on November 10.
