A landmark 1999 sci-fi horror RPG is back in the spotlight: System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is free on the Epic Games Store until October 8.
Claim it now, keep it after the offer
The remaster is part of Epic’s current free-games rotation alongside Buried Stars. Claiming it before the offer changes on October 8 adds it to your library permanently under Epic’s usual giveaway rules.
This is a claim window, not a free weekend. Once it is attached to the account during the promotion, the game remains available after the cutoff.
Why the original still matters
System Shock 2 first arrived in 1999 and helped define the immersive-sim approach to game design: explore a hostile space, read the environment, build a character, and solve problems with more than one possible strategy.
The Von Braun’s corridors mix first-person combat, role-playing choices, resource pressure, and horror. Its influence can still be felt in later games that use audio logs, environmental storytelling, and player-built solutions to turn a location into part of the story.
What the remaster changes
Nightdive’s 25th Anniversary Remaster modernizes the presentation while preserving the original game underneath. It adds updated visuals, widescreen support, and quality-of-life work intended to make the classic easier to run on current hardware.
Cross-play co-op is another major addition, letting up to four players face the Von Braun together across supported platforms. That gives returning fans and first-time players a very different way to revisit the game’s systems.
The bottom line
If System Shock 2 has been sitting on a “play someday” list, this is the easiest reason to finally add it. The free claim expires October 8, and the remaster offers a cleaner path into one of PC gaming’s most influential horror RPGs without replacing what made the original important.
Offer timing and remaster details are based on Video Games Chronicle’s October 2026 report. The promotion is a dated snapshot and store availability can change.
