Dune: Awakening is one of the games trending on the Wire right now—and for good reason. Funcom’s open-world survival RPG is now on Xbox Game Pass, and its mix of exploration, building, combat, and story makes Arrakis a strong place to squad up.

Kong’s Take

I’ve been playing with Kimberly and Josh, and it has been a pretty good game so far. We plan on completing the story together, so this is only the beginning of our time on Arrakis.

What Dune: Awakening actually is

Dune: Awakening is a single-player and multiplayer open-world survival RPG set on Arrakis. You begin by learning how to survive the desert, then gather resources, craft equipment, build a base, develop your character, and work through a cinematic story centered on the mystery of the missing Fremen.

The world moves beyond empty sand. Players can explore Fremen caves, the streets of Arrakeen, faction settlements, testing stations, and the Deep Desert. Sandstorms and sandworms make travel dangerous, while ground vehicles and a player-built ornithopter eventually open up faster ways to cross the planet.

It is on Xbox Game Pass now

The Xbox version launched on September 22, 2026 and is available through Xbox Game Pass. It supports Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and ROG Xbox Ally. Xbox Play Anywhere keeps progression shared between Xbox console and the Microsoft Store PC version, which makes it easier to continue the same character across devices.

Xbox Series X offers a Performance mode targeting 60 fps at dynamic 4K and a Quality mode targeting 30 fps at dynamic 4K. The console release also includes controls and interface work tailored for Xbox.

The complete Book One story is ready

The current version includes the conclusion of Book One, so the story can now be played from beginning to end in one run. Existing story missions also award new cosmetics, weapon and armor variants, and placeable decorations.

That is the part that makes this a natural game for our group. Kimberly, Josh, and I can keep progressing together instead of treating every session like disconnected survival grinding. The plan is to see the story through as a team.

Play solo, with friends, or in a larger world

Dune: Awakening now includes a full single-player mode with difficulty presets and detailed customization. Players can adjust sandstorms, harvesting, XP multipliers, durability, building limits, and other systems to set their own pace.

Multiplayer remains a major part of the game. Friends can share a private server, while public servers support a much larger social survival experience. PvP is now optional, and the full game can be played in PvE without giving up content or rewards. The Deep Desert also offers separate PvE and PvP instances.

Building, combat, and progression

Base building starts with a practical desert outpost and can grow into a large stronghold with crafting machines, spice refineries, storage, and decorations. Vehicles and bases can be backed up, and quality-of-life updates reduce how much progress can be lost.

Character growth pulls from Dune’s Schools of the Imperium, including Swordmaster, Bene Gesserit, Trooper, and Mentat abilities. A newer Specializations system lets players invest into crafting, gathering, exploration, combat, and sabotage, while Augmentations add powerful modifiers to high-tier gear.

Combat has also been revised with a wider parry window, better enemy behavior, rebalanced stamina, and new weapons. It still asks players to prepare, but it is more approachable than the original PC launch version.

Why it is worth watching

Game Pass removes the biggest barrier to trying Dune: Awakening on Xbox, and the September update arrived with far more than a console port. Single-player, optional PvP, the complete Book One campaign, broader customization, and more than a year of updates make this the best starting point the game has had.

There is more on the roadmap too. The free Polar Cap update is planned for later in 2026 with an icy survival map, new resources, loot, crafting options, and its own story. Full cross-platform play is also planned for after the console launch, though Funcom has not announced a date.

The bottom line

Dune: Awakening has the systems of a survival game, but the story, factions, vehicles, and Dune setting give the journey a stronger direction than simple crafting for its own sake. It is already a good group game for us, and finishing the campaign together should be the real test of how well Arrakis holds up over time.
